A unilateral field advantage for detecting repeated elements.

چکیده
Previous studies have shown that letter repetitions are detected more rapidly when presented bilaterally (one letter in each visual field) than when presented unilaterally (both in the same field) when subjects have to report matches independently of case or font (e.g., Aa). This pattern of results is referred to as a bilateral field advantage. Here, we present evidence of an opposite pattern of results for detecting repeated items when they are physically identical. In our repetition detection paradigm, subjects indicated whether there was a repetition of any two of four presented items, one in each quadrant of the visual field. Stimulus classes tested included letters, color, size, orientation, and motion paths. The subjects were significantly faster at detecting unilateral versus bilateral repetitions for four out of the five stimuli classes tested, with a trend in the same direction for the fifth. This unilateral field advantage suggests that low-level processes group physically identical items more efficiently within hemifields than across.

A 297 B Unilateral field advantage
This study examines inter-hemispheric interactions in detecting objects that are simultaneously repeated in an array of objects. Previous studies have shown that presenting two identical objects to a single hemifield speeds up repetition detection. This unilateral field advantage (UFA) is often attributed to the relatively low-level processing demands for detecting a perceptual repetition, and ...
متن کاملFamiliarity does not affect the unilateral field advantage for repetition detection.
We have previously reported evidence that repetitions of letters, colors, sizes, and common motion paths are more rapidly detected when they are presented unilaterally (i.e., both in the same visual field) versus bilaterally (one element in each visual field; Butcher and Cavanagh (Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics 70:714-724, 2008). Here, we report evidence that this unilateral field advan...
متن کاملUsing an Appropriate Controller for Independent Current Control for Motoring of Force Windings of Bearing less Induction Motor
A bearingless induction machine has combined characteristics of induction motor and magnetic bearings. Therefore, the advantages are small size and low-cost. In the magnetic suspension of the bearingless motors, suspension forces are generated based on the feedback signals of displacement sensors detecting the movement of the rotor shaft. The suspension forces are generated taking an advantage ...
متن کاملObstacle and Game Element Detection with the 3D-Sensor Kinect
Detecting objects is of fundamental importance for the Eurobot Challenge 2011. This paper presents a Kinect-based approach to detect the game elements on the game field. Using the Kinect sensor provides the advantage that elements lying behind other elements can still be detected, which is nearly impossible for a laser-based approach. The Kinect provides depth information which is projected to ...
